I'm unable to reproduce this. Both the notification icon and the status
bar work fine.

I've attached a screenshot. The images correspond to the following
states:
Left: No unread items
Middle: One unread item
Right: Two or more unread items
I've also noticed that the status bar at the bottom of the Liferea
window possibly has a similar problem with a status label on the far
right. I
