It should not. However, I think the bug you ran into is related to a
known bug in Debian that has a fix in the precise-proposed repositories.

similar to this, but nobody's gone through and tested the version in the

Since this was an update problem, it should not affect a newly
provisioned server that hasn't had nginx installed prior to this update,
correct?

I believe this bug is related to the issue where the packages remove
configuration files and such and don't reinstall them.
Do me a favor and test this, please, Kelley. Do this, and see if the
configs show up again: dpkg --reconfigure nginx-common
