active is is very stable if you turn off the screensaver and you do not
switch to tty's

6 sudo vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf and you will find this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics
Controller"
Driver "intel" # "i810" or "intel"
As far as I could see desktop is getting back after a reboot and
switching to the "other" driver in xorg.
So after step 4...
5 Hit ctrl-alt-f1 and log in. (if you still see a light brown screen
just type your username and password and type reset as in
reality you are on the tty)

One extra question that wasn't clear to me: you switched on Desktop effects
right?
These problems normally are related to compiz fusion as far as I know.

Hmmm. I have the same Dell Optiplex 745 and just updated Gutsy. Still I
encounter these problems described in the top.
I am not sure that is is using the i810 driver though... how do I make sure
Ubuntu does?
(ps how did you get this nice system output?)

I had this problem too on a Dell Optiplex 745, but with today's Gutsy
update, it appears to have gone away. Current setup:
Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon i386, fully up-to-date
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.3.0, m
FYI re the CPU if it's relevant:
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
stepping: 2
