Unfortunately it looks like the correction has had a very short
lifespan. I logged in normally this morning and after perhaps 10
minutes of normal functionality, the screen went blank and all disk
activity stopped.
I have since then tried numerous methods to get the system back up but

Many thanks, I ran your suggested:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-raring linux-generic-lts-raring
installation; took the system all the way down and then booted up from a
cold start and everything now seems to be working normally.

Sorry, I forgot apport is not so advance with Ubuntu 12.04 (but you
shouldn't run it with sudo at any rate) :\
You may want to consider upgrading to the lts-raring graphics stack:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-raring linux-generic-lts-raring

Depending on how you look at it, this may or may not be considered a
bug. The problem developed immediately after replacing my graphics
adaptor because upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 failed stating there was a
problem
/var/log/Xorg.0.log may be helpful. Please run this command:
apport-collect 1228161
Note that I'm switching the package to xorg for now because you don't
explicitly say you're using the open source driver (and it will make
apport-collect gather more pertinent info).
