Ubuntu Software Center is not working. Started Synaptic, chose Ubuntu
Software Store, tried to install. Then crash, then message AMD64 is
not supported for this application (or something like that).

Ditto here. In my case I was selecting the third-party applications
secton.

try not to use too many third party apps.
only select a few that you would most need and remove the rest.
