Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use my new Brother ADS-2100 double sides document scanner
with ADF in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit, but having no luck. Scanimage reports
that it sees the scanner, but when I try to scan a page it says
"sane_start: Invalid argument". sane-find-scanner does not report seeing
the scanner at all. Simple-scan sees the scanner, but gives an error
message when I try to scan.

I know the scanner works and the problem is not with the cable or
something like that, because it works in Windows. I have also tried
another USB cable.

The output of "scanimage -L" is:

device `brother4:bus2;dev1' is a Brother ADS-2100 USB scanner

The output of "sudo scanimage -L" is the same (but it takes longer). I
will attach the output of "sane-find-scanner" and "sudo sane-find-
scanner", but both report not finding *any* USB devices, which is
strange, because doesn't scanimage also use libsane to find the scanner?

lsusb does find the scanner:

Bus 003 Device 021: ID 04f9:60a1 Brother Industries, Ltd

It does not matter which USB port I use (I had it on a hub at first, but
it doesn't work on two different USB ports on the machine itself
either).

Simple-scan does report seeing the scanner (as a "Brother ADS-2100",
which is correct), but when I try to scan something it works for a while
and then gives a red error bar saying "Failed to scan/Unable to start
scan" . I will attach screenshots and the output of "simplescan
--debug".

I followed Brother's instructions and installed the brother4 driver
using the deb from their website
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html#brscan4_ads),
as well as the deb they provide for setting the udev rules to allow
scanning by regular users
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1c.html#u13.04).

I have already tried various potential solutions I found around the web:

* adding lines to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules or
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules
* adding myself to the lp and scanner groups

None of it seemed to make any difference, and also I think Brother's
debs already take care of those things. In addition, if the problem was
with device permissions, scanning would work as root, right?

Please let me know what other information I can provide or things I can
try to get to the bottom of this!
