Had to reboot to be able to launch apps again.
Tried again after installing gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly as suggested by
Ricardo; this time, mediaplayer-app played the audio in full (didn't
freeze), but still no video.
Might not be related to the new plugins though; also, I believe VP8
