@Thaddäus Tintenfisch you seem to be correct, the sound in the video was
muted and the volume slider was all the way down. Didn't realize these
controls were there.

Just thought of the following which might be of help:
I did notice corruption of ~/.local
Chain of events:
- video & sound from youtube video working
- apt-get update|upgrade|dist-upgrade|autoremove
- video worked, sound from video muted, other system sounds OK
- reboot
- unable to log to KDE GU
