I also get strange characters in scilab 4 when a type an "é" in the main
window (I see "é"). I use the fr_FR.UTF-8 locale. But in scilab 5 it
now works properly (I see an "é").

Can you please let us know whether it still exists in Hardy version of
Scilab? I am unable to reproduce at my end. Thanks for helping us make
Ubuntu better.
