There has been no movement on this bug for over 13 months. Your answer
to question #1 posed above is critical, namely, there are models of
certain Sigmatel AC'97-based cards that will be INaudible by default if
'Tone' is unmuted. We need to assess the situation for Jaunty,

Bugs, which
bass and treble controls don't have any effect unless Tone is enabled.
Although it seems that sanify_levels_on_card() doesn't sanify bass or
treble levels either.
