+1, happening on my ubuntu 14.04 machine
screen is black on startup
nothing
go to tty1, login
ps -ef | grep lightdm
there's stuff running there
killed it all
then
startx
nothing
go to tty 2 and then back to 1
i see:
failed to apply acl on /dev/dri/card0 no such file or directory
and
error c
I sometimes have the same problem on Trusty.
