I got slow playback with gstreamer until I changed some gstreamer options (this
is a different problem, that others may have too).
$ gstreamer-properties

Same problem with me. The mix are firefox, compiz and ati driver. I
supposed this is a problem with the ati driver, anyone with the same
problem.

this problem very much still exist. Happen basically everytime I use
Firefox and totem/exaile at the same time.
The "workaround" mentioned above by Schnitty works though

i see the exact same problem, and i noticed that it seems to happen most
often when i have a web page open in firefox that has some sort of flash
video. i found that if i close totem and firefox, then restart totem to
watch the video, the problem often goes away without a reboot.

I have the same problem - Totem has no sound and plays incredibly slow -
frame by frame - but if I reboot, Totem seems to work fine and the file
plays as it should (the file as in AVI files).
Also, this could be unrelated, but I suspect not - after successfully
watching an AVI file where the speed
Turning Compiz Fusion off solved the slowness. MKV still doesn't work,
though.

The same for me. Everything was fine until I tried to open an .mkv file.
VLC works fine.

I also had the same issue, Video is very slow in Totem and also no
audio. Rhythmbox also didn't play the audio files.
But strangely, reboot fixed the isssue !!!
I don't know how to reproduce this.

Note also that the problem is NOT consistent. Sometimes a reboot fixes
it.
Also no problems with gxine or vlc.

I can confirm this problem even without hibernation or suspend on a dell
1420n. In MPlayer the video plays fine, but in totem in crawls. Seems
to happen for any type of Video.

As far as I have investigated, the bug is not primarily connected to the
gstreamer-.10-ffmpeg package. The systems performs the same with ffmpeg
package installed.
So. The bug is occured when I send my laptop to the sleep mode (suspend
mode). Hibernation mode still not tested.
