This behavior is what is expected. In dragging the attachment all you are doing is moving a link to where the attachment is. This happens cross-platform. Thusly, this is invalidated. This http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/gmail would be the appropriate place for further discussion.

Hold on a sec... This function has worked for more than a year and has only recently stopped working. I understand that when dragging and dropping an image the result is a link. And I also realize that this is quite possibly an application related problem. I've tested this drag and drop to save
