Public bug reported: I installed pm-utils, then ran sudo pm-hibernate, which simply made the screen flash, and nothing else happened.
A workaround seems to be to edit the file /etc/pm/config.d/defaults (create if it doesn't exist), then add the line... HIBERNATE_MODE="shutdown" ...and after this, sudo pm-hibernate successfully hibernates the system. To make this change integrated with the desktop (make hibernate appear in the menus) you edit a policykit file, following the highest-voted solution at... http://askubuntu.com/questions/94754/how-to-enable-hibernation ...and after a restart there should be new options and you should be able to use them within the power management routines of Ubuntu (Gnome in my case).
