After following all the proposed solutions in the thread, I have to
verify that the solution proposed in #58 is what worked for me.
I am running on a HP Zbook 15.

I have the backlight control keys working on 3.13.0-17 with the addition
of the following to my /etc/default/grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"
The backlight is controlled through the intel driver rather because the
internal display is connected to that car
Yep - I'd seen the man page for xrandr, but xbacklight has no effect on
my hardware, which is why I used xrandr. I guess as far as the
workarounds go, just use whatever works for you. Cheers.
