It looks like something broke since one of the latest updates of g-p-m.
On a MacBook C2D the applet (not very robust, hangs, 'has a mind of its
own') and g-p-m preferences adjust the brightness, but the keys although
raising the notification stick the brightness to the minimum and it's
impossible t
I must report that on a latest non-pro MacBook (the black one), the
brightness keys also don't work. I'll try one of the solutions posted
above as workarounds.

It is not included because nobody knew about it. The code is from 2006.
For macbook models that are now supported by different code.
I also searched and tried different backlight solutions but none of them
worked. Great finding!
I emailed the pommed devel mailing list, they'll probably include it
I am using the latest macbook pro c2d laptop with the latest update of Gutsy.
Neither brightness nor keyboard backlight controls work out of the box, though
sound controls work there is no sound anyways. However, I have found that using

To clarify: There is currently no way to adjust display brightness in
linux.
A low-level interface needs to be written that adjusts the right bits in
the hardware.
Pommed works with macbook rev3, but as long as such an interface does
not exist the pommed only calls a dummy function when the hotke
