I have the same problem and I'm pretty sure it's related to compiz? Text
isn't rendered or as defined as it should be.

Not really sure what to do with this one. Part of it is a duplicate of
another bug, part of it is because you're using compiz themes instead of
metacity themes, and part of it is actually a bug in nautilus. Please
open a new bug for the text on the desktop against nautilus, I'm closing
this one as

OK, I've looked at Windows Vista to see how its done there. I don't think it
looks the best, but the text is definitely readable. I'm attaching a screenshot
to demonstrate what they've done. In essence, they heavily blur translucent
title bars so that there are no sharp edges shining through
