You can also re-test with Qt 5.3.1 + Ubuntu 14.10 and report back. See

You should now be able to keep eg. Qt Creator and Ubuntu plugin
That finding makes it really tricky, as means non-square icons are
banned, which I don't think our design will agree with :|

After some investigation I found out that it's QIcon that just doesn't
support non-square icons... Which kind-a makes sense since the theme
.index files don't allow it either.
