I ran into the same problem on Ubuntu 7.10 / 64 bit ... looks like some kind of funkified host lookup. Note that it is considered very bad TCP/IP practice to put your own hostname on 127.0.0.1 Ubuntu seems to do a hack and add a line for 127.0.1.1 to /etc/hosts, which I removed as being also
