In my installation, libxine1-ffmpeg is okay. Which packages does it
break ?
If you are using third party repositories, try disabling them
temporarily and removing its installed packages.

By add the libxine-ffmpeg package, it worked for me also. Only problem
is as ElTimo wrote, it stopped when I tried to open a menu. For example
when I opened the scenes menu and selected one, a new window wanted to
open and once it did, it stopped working. But over all I'm happy the
DVD finally

I did this and it worked until it tried to open a menu. then it just
stopped and said "new position not determined." Any ideas?

libxine-ffmpeg is the correct package: it contains the MPEG demuxers and
decoders.
BTW, "dvd://dev/scd0"; "man 5 xine" for more info.

I can't play DVDs with gxine either. I select "DVD" from the menu and I
get the "demuxer not found" message.

Sorry, I don't know how to handle launchpad. It's not about "Baltix"
(what the hell is that anyway?), it's about Ubuntus gxine package.
