If correct that updatedb is only for locate/slocate commands to update
its database what makes it so important it run daily why not make it run
weekly and have a manual way to run it upon locate/slocate command or
just by using a command like we do with apt-file since they both search
local databas
I would agree with you in part ok my system has somewhat low mem in my
opinion but it is within spec to running gutsy so i feel blaming the
ram at that point would mean that the minimum sceps should be changed,
so im not sure blaming PC is a way to "fix" a bug. If updatedb should
run weekly maybe
I'd wager that the poor performance is the combination of updatedb running
and having only 256MB of RAM. Updatedb is creating a lot of IO and consuming
a fair amount of RAM, possibly causing swap, which in turn creates more IO,
which hurts the performance of the system. I'm not sure of the best way
Yes it was running at boot time as it did before, its the only thing i
can link to the issue
P4 1.7ghz
256mb ram

Was updatedb running again? Updatedb updates the search database that
"locate" uses, it is not directly related to Gnome. It seems odd that it
would be running at boot time consistently. What are your system specs
(CPU, RAM, HDD)?

I haven't found any other reports that sound similar to this. Since John
seems to think this was caused by updatedb running at the time and
hasn't been able to reproduce it, I'm going to close this as invalid. If
you see it again John, please change the state appropriately.

You
Shouldn't apport have given the system info? Maybe it only reports the
