I've just updated my MacBookAir5,1 to ubuntu 16.10 and can confirm this
bug still occurs. If I close the lid I'm forced to do a hard reboot to
regain access.

Might be good to retest this. I had a similar issue on a Air 7,1 but its
fixed in the latest ubuntu (16.10)
