I faced the same bug, after I cleaned the system with bleachbit and
ubuntu-tweak.
locale
sudo locale-gen "de_DE.UTF-8"
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
sudo sh -c "echo 'LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8\nLANG=de_DE.UTF-8' >> /etc/environment"
sudo sh -c "echo -e 'LANG=de_DE.UTF-8\nLC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8' >
/etc/defau
...in my case the gui opened up, but the error warning appeared instead
of the picture overview.
