Tried sudo cheese, or cheese -d "/dev/video0" with no luck.
guvcview works with internal webcam. With an external work but VERY laggy.

but I had a similar problem which was caused by a too high default
webcam resolution under cheese. Lowering the webcam resolution settings
in cheese and restarting the application solved the problem.

I has this problem and I simply re-installed v4l driver and the v4l
control panel, and now my webcam is now working. :)
