I cannot reproduce on Ubuntu 14.10 with MATE 1.8, LibreOffice 4.3.0.2. Even if I trash an empty file ending in .odt, it is recognized as being for Writer. This may be specific to LibreOffice 3.5.x/12.04, but I cannot confirm for myself. Are you using Unity, or some other desktop environment?

Sorry, I misunderstood the screenshot--it is the filter selection window for unrecognized formats in LibreOffice, i.e. the correct program was opened--not a matter of the file manager or desktop environment. Now, are trashed .odt files with content recognized? (In which case, I cannot
