I think Boot-Repair's advance mode does a chroot for its purge
reinstall of grub. From that you probably can run other commands also,
but I have not tried that.

following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a

I am having the same issue but for an ASUS-u46e with both the 3.13 and
3.14 kernels. I did not have this problem with ubuntu 13.10.
