I have a similar problem. x-org dies when I run glxgears. Both when
running compiz and kwin. I have an intel i855 graphics card using the
intel driver.

Sitsofe, take note of mabovo's post that this occurs with ATI fglrx
driver also, so it's not just an nvidia problem.

Now we're getting somewhere. Can we get more conformation from the ATI

I can also confirm this with my Dell E1505 with 256MB nvidia Geforce Go
laptop running gutsy (daily updates). No problems in Feisty. Only
happens when compiz of KDE shadowing are running. Starting a game dumps
me back to login screen.
I've tried all available nvidia drivers, including the

Yeah, I'm still using nvidia, but I never had any problems with this in
Feisty.
But actually, I'm not having the same troubles anymore since the compiz
updates. glxgears still crashes X, but now I'm able to play all of the
games mentioned above without trouble.

If you are still using an NVIDIA card it could well be an NVIDIA binary driver
problem... Are you still using an NVIDIA card?

I don't have any problem when using Metacity, only when Compiz/Fusion is
running. So, it's not an nvidia-only problem.

I have the same problem. Gutsy, nvidia geforce 7600. Whenever I run
glxgears, or any other opengl app it crashes X and restarts. Some of
the other apps that have crashes X were GNUbik, Dreamchess, and
Neverball. Neverball works in windowed mode, but switching to
fullscreen crashes X. Didn't

I have the same problem. But I don't get this issue when i start
application in full screen mode, for instance with Enemy territory
(Game).

@mabovo: Is your problem that X crashes when you are using Compiz and
trying to run an OpenGL app? I believe that your bug is unlikely to be
the same as this one, since you have to be using Xgl in order to use
Compiz.
