The upgrade is blocked by ibm-lotus-notes which depends on grep:i386,
but installing this version of grep would remove grep:amd64 which is an
essential package and cannot be removed.

kind of message. At least more technical users could then sort out the
In this case the problem was quite obvious, but it is very complex to
automatically identify the cause of an upgrade failure if even possible
at all. A technical user can go through the logs, try to understand what
is wrong and solve the problem himself.
