Hey Frank, did your problem start after the upgrade to 14.04?
If so we might have a similar, if not the same problem:

Could you post the output of:
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
to see if your AMD GPU get's switch
This release of Ubuntu is no longer receiving maintenance updates. If

Hi Paul,
Yesterday I decided to do a fresh installation of Ubuntu (14.04). All
problems dissapeared. Unfortunately, I'm not able to reproduce the old
situation. Sorry for that :(
Problems started after the upgrade, that´s right.
