Once mounted, I can browse the directory just find using nautilus.
I'm currently browsing from ubuntu 13.10

Although I did mount it on a mac (osx 10.68) and it seemed o.k.

server and I've never seen this when the list of files is displayed.

Ok. I think this is most likely to be a bug in the interaction between jfs and
nfsd on the server (so, a bug in the 3.8.0 kernel). Do you have other clients
running other versions of Ubuntu, and do they exhibit the same problem? What
mount options are you using when mount
