Following your advice, I add in xorg.conf in Device section, the Option
"UseEDID" "FALSE" and it works as in the beginning!
I' ll look for the package that caused the problem. My Ubuntu is rather recent.
I installed it on July 2007.
Thank you for your help.

As said by Sisofe this looks like a problem with the proprietary nvidia driver,
but this should have happened all the time since the last update of this driver
was done 23 May 2007.
It would be helpfull if you try to find the package that caused the problem,

I believe this is due to a bug in a the NVIDIA binary driver (you can
see it falling back to "nvidia-auto-select" in the logs) failing to
properly read the DDC information from your monitor. It is probably
possible to work around this using a parameter listed in
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8
In order to fulfill your information, find attached the Xorg.0.log of my
computer with "nv" driver.

Second, find attached xorg.conf.back which is a backup of xorg.conf with "nv"
driver.
This xorg.conf with "nv", when activated, works rather well (1024x 768,
800x600, 640x480 screen resolutions are possible on my screen) except 3D
acceleration, of course !
And this, at the same level of ubuntu.
No problem.
First, find attached Xorg.0.log which describe the startup sequence of
Xorg.

Could you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.back again as seperate uncompressed attachments
instead of pasting them, this makes it unreadable and difficult to
handle.
