I think it's an very minor but inconvenient issue of LibreOffice default
settings I fixed mine (Version: 4.2.3.3
Build ID: 420m0(Build:3) installed from default ubuntu repos, via:
ToolsOptionsLibreOfficeAppearance
then enable
[X] Table Boundaries

I found a quick fix. In the general libreoffice options there you can
define user specific colors. I activated this for the table borders and
now the tables are displayed with borders visible. Don't know why this
is necessary.
