I guess we'll close it then.

I don't have a 13.10 desktop CD - this was originally installed as 12.04, I
think. Anyway, these messages definitely started after the upgrade:
root@allhats2:/var/log# !gre
grep -c sk_disk_check_sleep_mode syslog syslog.1
syslog:94
syslog.1:290
root@allhats2:/var/log# !zgr
zgrep -c sk_disk_check_s
Ok, it looks like you have a jmicron usb -> ata bridge that is known to
be broken and choke when given SMART commands, so it is explicitly
blacklisted. This isn't new in trusty though. Could you try running
skdump from the 13.10 desktop cd?

mmap(NULL, 8192, PROT_READ|PROT_WR
Hrm... can you run sudo strace skdump /dev/sde? This will produce a lot
of output but might provide some clues.

Can you run sudo skdump on these drives? You may need to install the

This particular upgrade was from 13.10, but it was initially installed
as 12.04 and upgraded to each major version along the way.
$ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sde
[sudo] password for ptomblin:
/dev/sde:
ATA device, with non-removable media
Model Number: ST2000DM001-1CH164
Did you upgrade from 13.10 or 12.04? I don't see any changes from 13.10
to 14.04 that could account for this working before but not now. What
does sudo hdparm -I /dev/sde show?

This is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/1196007, however I
think it's different because this one only seems to affect my external
USB drives.
