I have the same problem as described above. I'm running Gutsy the latest all
up to date. I have found that every time I get an update it crashes
Thunderbird when I click on a message to view it. The only error I get also is
the segmentation fault error. I have found that if I run
sudo aptitu
I've got the same problem, though running thunderbird in safe mode at
least enables you to read the mail.

I think I've found a workaround. I deleted my ~/.mozilla-thunderbird
folder after backing it up. I opened thunderbird, giving it a fresh
~/.mozilla-thunderbird folder. Using
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Files_and_folders_in_the_profile
as a reference, I copied the files
