Same here! Problem lies in this old video card. What I did:
Go to console (Ctrl + Alt + F1), login, then kill gdm, in my case,
lightdm:
sudo killall lightdm
Then, execute:
nvidia-xsettings
This will create a basic xorg.conf into /etc/X11.
Now, install Gnome Flashback, wich brings two options
I get the same, with the same card and nvidia-173

Same here on Nvidia FX 5200, driver nvidia-173. MATE/Metacity has no
problem, but turning Compiz on leads to black screen in either Unity,
MATE or GNOME fallback. Everything was working in 12.04.
