I have the same problem (unity8-desktop-session-mir). I tried also unity8-lxc
and found the same bug.
No unity8 log was found under .cache/upstart/
I'm running ubuntu 16.04 inside virtualbox

Folks, let's not confuse bugs here. This bug was originally reported
against unity8-desktop-session-mir and not unity8-preview-lxc, ie,
unity8-lxc. These are 2 different packages.
The logs attached in comment #11 are for using unity8-lxc, so they don't
really apply to this bug.
