For me amarok can skip tracks, but, for example, doesn't show the information
about the currently played track.

The Amarok 1.4 release series will not get a fix from upstream for this since
the new protocol is to complex to introduce in a bug-fix only release.
However Amarok 2 will use the new protocol.
