kernel bisection status:
3.15.1-031501 is BAD
3.16.0-031600rc1 is GOOD
So I've identified the two consecutive releases with the bug status changed,
and thus the fix has got to be among the 3.16.0-031600rc1 patches.
I'll study git and continue with the bisection tomorrow, then let you all know.

Hi,
the 3.16rc1 kernel test I did for my other bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1330637), fixed both issues!
Now pressing Fn+Left/Right works as expected, reducing/increasing LCD
brightness!
Someone please explain me how to close a bug, so I'll be glad to close it
myself!

sorry but the upstream 3.15.0 kernel did not fix this issue: the screen
brightness always stays at its maximum level.
I should now add the tag "kernel-bug-exists-upstream" as per your instructions,
but don't actually know how... sorry!
