Yeah, I've got a MacBook 5,2 too, and I can't make ALSA drive the
headphone jack at all. The hdajackretask rerouting to the line-in (then
plug the headphones in there) workaround that Tobias suggested is indeed
very hacky, but does work.

Okay, at least there is a workaround for this: Install "alsa-tools-gui",
start "HDAJackRetask" and override the Pin "0x1a" with "Headphone". Not
a very nice solution, but its the only workaround I got to work.

Ok, I'll remove it. My bootloader only starts Ubuntu after cold boot,
but not after restart, so it's not true for me.
