The Alternate Desktop CD does not include the Live CD, it is only meant for
hard disk installation using a text-based installer and should be used to
install Ubuntu on systems with less than 256 MB RAM.
Does your machine have 256 MB RAM?

What version of Ubuntu are you using?
Does your Windows 98 PC meet the minimal system requirements? The Ubuntu 7.04
LiveCD needs 256 MB of RAM, if you have less memory you should use the
alternate CD.
