I don't know what card the original reporter has, but ES1000 (RN50) is a
server card and not much of a multimedia card, see also

This bug still occurs under Gutsy and Hardy with ATI Technologies Inc
ES100 and radeon driver. Video output doesn't work with XV but with
OpenGL if it is choosen in VLC. The xorg.conf was recreated after Hardy
upgrade.

I have the issue on Hardy with the proprietary driver fglrx.
Since thre is a bug with that driver and the opengl rendering it is
quite annoying.
It seems to me that this bug is linked with the composite extension
being activated.
And maybe fglrx is a little buggy, but since it works under other
