Public bug reported: Binary package hint: fontconfig-config
Sympotom: I'm using Ubuntu with German locale but want to study Chinese. By default Ubuntu does a very bad job for selecting a font for Chinese characters. Simplified characters are displayed in a different font than non-simplified characters and some characters like 你 where totally illegible. Ubuntu does by default provide two good fonts for Chinese characters (ttf-arphic-ukai and ttf-arphic-uming), but they are not used. Reason: The configuration file /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-nonlatin.conf, which is part of fontconfig-config mentions AR PL SungtiL GB, AR PL Mingti2L Big5, AR PL KaitiM GB and AR PL KaitiM Big5, but these fonts are not included in a standard install of Ubuntu as they are superseded by AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni and AR PL ZenKai Uni and those fonts are not mentioned in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-nonlatin.conf. Solution: Add both AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni and AR PL ZenKai Uni to /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-nonlatin.conf. ** Affects: fontconfig (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Bad selection of font for Chinese characters https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134683 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
