I use the same GUFW firewall on both computers. Both use the Home
profile allowing any thing out certain apps in (e.g. CUPS, Samba,
SSH). Do Bonjour/DNS-SD broadcasts use a specific port?

I noticed that there was a preconfigured rule for bonjour in GUFW. So I
requested it (it then allowed 5353udp 5298all, on In) I was able to
add a printer use it. Interestingly, my desktop does not have these
'allowed' but printing is still OK. Anyway, I've added this
preconfigured rule to my
So then I will close this bug as it is a problem of the firewall and not
of CUPS or Avahi.
Feel free to report a bug in GUFW if you think that it has a wrong
default configuration.

Printer did not appear in window's list. Only 'device' in nested list
was my laptop, which was only computer switched on.
PS running avahi-discover required installation of it which also caused
installation of python-avahi.

Just done the same on my desktop (connected by ethernet whereas laptop
is connected by wireless). That showed the printer under 'Web Site' sub-
section printer is able to print from it. Both computers run 64 bit
Trusty.

Is it possible that there is something like a personal firewall running
on your laptop which prevents Bonjour/DNS-SD broadcasts to come in?

This opens a window with a list of all devices/services in the network
which are broadcasted by Bonjour/DNS-SD and discovered by avahi-daemon.
Does your printer appear there? In which section(s) and subsection(s)
does it appear?
