Well, when you said to report the extensions, I tried to disable them
and see what happened. Turned out that The Adblock extention (adblock
plus 0.7.5.1) is causing the problem.
After disabling it, all the applets opened as expected.

Firefox momentarily freezes while opening

I can't reproduce the described behavior with firefox
(2.0.0.6+1-0ubuntu1) and java-plugin (1.5.0-11-1ubuntu2).
Can you please describe a detailed test case to reproduce that behavior.
Please indicate also what plugins/extensions do you have enabled.
