A working solution for me is running these commands in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
using GNU/Linux kernel 3.17.0-031700-lowlatency #201410051635 SMP
PREEMPT :

sudo dpkg -i virtualbox-4.3_4.3.1
the 3.17 kernel is not supported by ubuntu 14.04, it is only official for 14.10
(currently in beta testing), to get virtaulbox working you would need to
download it from the utopic repos (which may or may not be kernel 3.17 ready
just yet)
