I did as you said: simply sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
I didn't loose the desktop but the "Additional Drivers" is missing.
However it seems that the driver was installed well!
I am attaching all the logs.
What command can I run to check that NVIDIA is properly installed and working?

by "reproducing the problem", I meant installing the nvidia-331 package
(do not use the installer from NVIDIA's website), letting the system
crash, and collecting the logs for me.
Also, please do not try to blacklist nouveau. It's all done
automatically. Simply type the following and reboot:
sudo
The actual configuration of my computer is:
1. Fresh install of Ubuntu
2. Upgrade Ubuntu
That's the state of all the logs I attached.
I didn't re-try to install NVIDIA driver manually and therefore I didn't
blackout nouveau. Next step would be: blackout nouveau, stop lightdm and
install NVIDIA dri

I'll be grateful for any helpI installed the NVIDIA driver manually and
then lost the desktop (unity) after login... So I re-installed everything...
all that several times SO I need new ideas.

on 201402-14677 Dell Vostro 3446 with 14.04 (3.13.0-34, nothing changed when I
open this bug), the drivers are now available.
Also double confirmed this on 201211-12070 Dell Vostro 5460, drivers are
available with 14.04.1 stock image + apt-get update.
