I had the same problem after switching from the xserver-xorg-video-ati
driver to fglrx and then back to xserver-xorg-video-ati after
experiencing a memory leak:

I have tha same (1440, gamma, fglrx removed) with Radeon HD 4850, but only on
upgraded ubuntu from 12.04 to 14.04 (both LTS) .
With "14.04.1 LTS desktop live" I have correct resolution:

Thank you for your report. However, support for your GPU has been
removed in the proprietary driver some time ago (bug 1058040) and it is
possible that the open source driver simply does not support certain
screen resolutions (out of the box or at all).
