The issue was caused by some kind of inconsistent invitations
information in ".kde/share/configs/krfbrc" - the krfb GUI only showed 1
active invitiation, but the file showed 2, even though
"invitation_num=1". Using "Delete All" in the GUI did not.
After manually deleting both remaining invitations
Testing against a third Kubuntu PC the connection works correctly, so
this appears to be an issue with KRFB on the 'server' initially used for
testing. I'll continue investigations.

Follow-up:
Enabled "Allow uninvited connections" and no password set, the client
and server still fail identically.
Reversed the direction of the connections and it works.
As the 'server' reports refusing an uninvited connection I'm focusing on
a KRFB issue for now.
