Thanks Jason. That was my problem too, prefered application for terminal was set to 'Custom', blank in command line and '-x' in options. Setting preferred terminal to gnome-terminal fixes the problem. However I have no idea how this setting was set to this erroneous value. I also think nautilus

Is this not a duplicate of bug 133837 ? I was seeing this, checked out my Preferred Applications preferences in GNOME and had a blank custom command for my preferred terminal emulator. Nautilus still shouldn't break like it does though. -- nautilus-open-terminal freezes nautilus

Yes, I am having trouble getting a trace too, since nautilus is not crashing stricto sensu, it is running forever eating all CPU... So I followed the instructions given on the wiki for debugging, but I couldn't get any trace. Here is what I get in the end : Program exited normally. (gdb)

I did manage to discover what was causing this! On my laptop it would crash, on my desktop it would not. Came to discover that somehow on my laptop, even after 'resetting' gnome (by removing the .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf, .gconfd directories) that some settings sit around, like your preferred
