The default configuration should be /var/run/rsnapshot.pid (see 
http://sources.debian.net/src/rsnapshot/1.3.1-4/rsnapshot.conf.default.in/#L131),
 is it a custom configuration on your setup ?
Anyway, as rsnapshot is not really a daemon (launched by cron), if the pid 
don't exist and if the user running rsnapshot can write, the file is 
re-created. The pid file is created to ensure that it only run once at a time 
as a lockfile.
